Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) was established in 1983 by the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Its objectives are to support economic growth, regional cooperation and the development of private enterprise in the GCC region. With an authorised capital base of $2.1 billion and shareholders' funds of $1.6 billion, GIC is one of the most strongly capitalised financial institutions in the Gulf region. It had $7.4 billion in assets at the end of 2005.
The corporation is headquartered in Kuwait GIC's strategy emphasizes its role in principal investing in projects and ventures in the GCC region. GIC's portfolio of direct investments include 45 projects in various economic sectors with total investments of about $680 million at the end of 2005. The strategy also refocuses attention on GCC capital markets and promotes GIC's role as a provider of comprehensive investment services to Gulf investors or international investors interested in the region.
Other activities include the provision of financial advisory services related to restructuring, privatization and project evaluation, management and distribution of new issues of debt and equity securities. GIC is also providing its clients with a range of GCC and international investment funds through its marketing division. It publishes daily indices for GCC Stock markets using a methodology similar to that of MSCI. The corporation continues to invest in international capital markets to support overall profitability, with a sizeable portfolio in international and GCC bonds. GIC uses internationally reputable managers for its investments in international equities and alternatives.
